Tonight’s program features music by influential voices in modern jazz, highlighting a balance of tradition, innovation, and personal expression.
The set opens with “On Green Dolphin Street,” arranged by Marques Carroll, offering a fresh take on this jazz standard while preserving its harmonic depth and swinging feel. Herbie Hancock’s “Firewater” brings a driving groove and adventurous energy, reflecting Hancock’ fusion of jazz harmony and funk-inspired rhythm.
“Dream Traveler” by Roy Hargrove showcases lyrical expression and soulful phrasing, while Woody Shaw’s “In a Capricornian Way” challenges the ensemble with its complex harmony and forward-thinking melodic language. Jim Rotondi’s “Downtown Sounds” delivers a contemporary straight-ahead feel rooted in the modern jazz tradition.
The program concludes with “Hargrove” by Kenny Garrett, a powerful tribute celebrating the spirit and influence of Roy Hargrove and the enduring connection between generations of jazz artists.
