FEFU AND HER FRIENDS

Sep 30—Oct 7, 2023

UIC Theatre L280
1044 W Harrison St.

By María Irene Fornés

Directed by Xiomara Cornejo

Come be a fly on the wall of one of the most influential feminist plays of the 20th Century. Known for its groundbreaking style of conversational realism with moments of absurdism, FEFU AND HER FRIENDS features a group of women who gather at FEFU’s country house in the 1930s to party, swap ideas and possibly launch a revolution. Audiences will eavesdrop as the women argue, gossip, and confess their anxieties and desires in the struggle to navigate a world dominated by men.

Xiomara Cornejo: “It is a privilege to bring to life the tormented world and poetic language of Fefu and Her Friends, written by the brilliant María Irene Fornés, a pioneer in Latinx playwriting. I’m most excited to unpack Fornés’ complex characters and explore notions of gender roles, sexual politics, same-sex relationships, and female identity alongside my cast. It’s sure to be a thought-provoking, thrilling, lovely, and dangerous ride!”
