Anton Chekhov’s final play, The Cherry Orchard, is a tragicomic masterpiece about an aristocratic Russian family facing the loss of their estate—and the beloved cherry orchard that has defined their family for generations. Set on the eve of the Russian Revolution, the play captures a society in transition, as the old world of the aristocracy gives way to a new social order.

When family matriarch Lyubov Ranevskaya returns to her childhood home, she must confront the estate’s impending auction. Lopakhin, a pragmatic merchant and the son of one of the family’s former servants, offers a solution: cut down the orchard and build summer cottages on the land. But for Lyubov and her family, the orchard represents a cherished past they cannot bear to lose. As their world collapses around them, Chekhov asks what do we hold onto when everything we know is slipping away.
