About Friends of the Gamelan
Incorporated in 1980 as a Javanese gamelan-focused community ensemble with the purpose of providing music instruction and performance, the Friends of the Gamelan has expanded to include two ensembles with individually distinct sets of gamelan instruments, each respectively dedicated to Javanese and Balinese gamelan music and dance, led by artistic directors Claire Fassnacht and Alex Yoffe. Master artists Dewa Ayu Eka Putri (Grinnell College) and I Putu Tangkas Adi Hiranmayena (Grinnell College) provided ensemble coaching for today’s performance.
