Joon Park Ph.D joined the University of Illinois Chicago as an Associate Professor in 2023. Previously, he was an assistant professor at the University of Arkansas.
Joon’s research interest includes jazz analysis, the music of Arnold Schoenberg, and East Asian music and music theories. His articles have appeared in Music Theory Online, Journal of Jazz Studies, and Engaging Students. He recently translated the interview of a Korean-German composer Isang Yun from Korean to English.
He is also a jazz pianist and a continuo player and has been performing in and around Fayetteville, Arkansas. He brings his academic, performance, and personal experience as a non-native English speaker into his research and weaves together different subfields of music theory while considering what music theory can do for our society at large.
He has regularly presented papers at the annual meetings of the Society for Music Theory and various regional meetings. Joon currently serves as a Music Theory Midwest executive committee member and an SMT-V editorial board member.
