Megan Carney is the Director of the Gender & Sexuality Center at UIC. She has an M.F.A. in Theatre Arts from Virginia Tech with a focus on Directing and Public Dialogue. Megan is a founder of About Face Youth Theatre and a member of Rivendell Theatre Ensemble. She has written and directed many plays based on interviews and found documents including Open Systems: Hurricane Katrina (Chicago’s Goodman Theatre), Let Them Eat Cake (Dixon Place, NYC), Pittsburgh Project Remix (Pump House, Homestead Steel Mill) and eight years of original plays with About Face Youth Theatre (staged at Victory Gardens, the Goodman, and on national tours). She also directed Lisa Dillman’s The Walls for Rivendell Theatre at Steppenwolf Garage. Megan’s work as a writer, director and teaching artist has been recognized with multiple After Dark Awards, a TCG Observership Grant, the GLSEN Pathfinder Award, an APA Presidential Citation, induction in Chicago’s Gay and Lesbian Hall of Fame, a Rockefeller Foundation MAP Grant, and a GLAAD Media Award nomination. Her writing on community-based art making is published online and in print.
